Mike Bergey Named "2002 Wind Energy Pioneer" by US-DOE

September 3, 2003

In October 2002 the Wind Powering America program at the U.S. Department of Energy named twelve "2002 Wind Energy Pioneers".  Each is featured in the US-DOE 2003 wind energy calendar.  Mike Bergey was named as one of the twelve and is featured as "Mr. September". Fortunately, it is not a bathing suit calendar.  The calendar is available at 2003 WPA/DOE Calendar (PDF, 1.9 MB)

The September citation was written by Randy Swisher, Executive Director of the American Wind Energy Association, and reads:

"Mike Bergey has been a wind energy pioneer since 1977, when he became vice president of Bergey Windpower.  In 1987, he became president of the organization.  Mike was educated as an engineer, but he has an unusual ability to represent his company and the industry in arenas that are far from the engineering world, including energy policy and export promotion.  He has twice served as president of the American Wind energy Association and has served on the AWEA board since 1981. He also served as chairman of AWEA's Small Turbine Committee, AWEA's Export Committee, and the U.S. Export Council for Renewable energy.  In 1994, he was honored as AWEA's "Wind Industry Man of the Year"

The US-DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory also presented framed posters to the twelve pioneers at the 2003 AWEA Windpower 2003 conference in Austin, Texas.  Mike Bergey's poster is reproduced below.
